How to Prevent Water Damage While On Vacation

advanta_8.4.15For many of us, the desire to travel peaks when summer rolls around. In fact, recent poll reveals that about 55% of Americans will go on vacation for a few days to a week this summer.

Now that your bags are packed and it’s finally time to go, the last thing you want to worry about is potential flood and water damage to your home while you’re on vacation. You come home from a nice vacation only to find that your house has been flooded due to leaking pipes or broken supply line.

Don’t let water damage ruin all that rest and relaxation. Prepare and safeguard your home before taking off.

Make sure your sump pump is in good working order

Examine your sump pump and check that it is in good condition to ensure its proper operation. Left unchecked, it can lead to thousands of dollars in flood damage.

You also have to keep in mind that sump pumps are powered by electricity. So be sure to install a battery-powered backup source to ensure that it won’t stop working in the event you lose power.

Shut off the main valve

The best protection against catastrophic water damage is to shut off the main water valve that controls the water entering your home. Once you’ve done that, try to turn off a faucet somewhere in the house. All the water should stop if you have turned off the main valve properly.

If you’re not sure where to find it, look for the water meter. It is usually located beside it.

Check your home for leaks

Get one last look at your property and check for any signs of leaks. Walk the perimeter and check the pipes under the sinks, making sure that nothing is leaking.

Even a small opening can drive water in your home. The seals around your windows must be in good condition. Replace shingles and recaulk seals if needed.
